May is a butt kicker of a month for gardeners. Yes, I know it is June and that is my point.
We were already rolling in abundance when we completed our eastward migration. YES! Cold frames filled with spinach. Three beds of successfully wintered-over cold kissed carrots. And year two of asparagus looking promising. One more year to go until we can start harvesting the new asparagus patch. Looks like the deer were sampling the goods – deer aren’t even supposed to like asparagus. Seems like the deer are getting more bold with their tasting options.

Other than that, there are a lot of empty garden beds to be dealt with. It can be intimidating to look at all those empty, weed-filled beds. So much to do before we even get to planting — weeding, tilling, raking, hauling manure. But it’s not intimidating for the Boss. He’s a gardening machine.
The Boss’ focus and attention is unmatched. I don’t have the attention span for weeding. I’m too “willy nilly,” he says. And I am, I do a little weeding then get bored, move on to something else. Plus, he can’t stand to watch/listen to me weed. It drives him nuts to hear a weed snap above the roots. Fine, he can weed. I’ll start some seeds.
I’m an enthusiastic seed starter. So many hopes and dreams and intentions go into each black cell. We’ll see how it really plays out. It may take me until August to plant all those hope and dreams. But the Boss stays on task. Before I know it, 47 beds are weeded, carrots are planted, the compost is turned. He gets shit done.
Then there are the plants from our good friend and looooong time gardener Ted, without whom we would have no peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, cosmos, marigolds, nasturtiums . . . He gets them all going and generously shares them with us so we can fill our garden with goodness. Without him we could not have half of our garden – those 48 pepper plants, 60 tomatoes. Ted, too, is a focused, attentive gardener. And he doesn’t just share with us. That’s a lot of plant starts. He’s got lots of good ju ju coming his way.

So yeah. May flew by in a whirlwind of dirt and manure. Fortunately, May was chilly with a few frosts. It was good we didn’t have many things planted yet. And here we are in June. Still working to get the garden in. The Boss cruising along accomplishing big things everyday and checking tasks off his extensive list; and me still catching up on weeding the flower beds the Boss lets me manage. Maybe I’ll just chuck a few seeds in there willy nilly and see what comes up (don’t tell the Boss).
